Electric cars are pushing the limits of speed and power like never before, and the YangWang U9 Xtreme has just rewritten the record books. In 2025, among the 120 cars tested by Car and Driver, the fastest vehicles were all electric, with some producing over 1000 horsepower. But the U9 Xtreme has now taken performance to an entirely new level.
Beating the Bugatti
The YangWang U9 Xtreme, previously known as the U9 Track Edition, has officially become the fastest car on the planet. Its top speed of 308.4 mph surpasses every other vehicle, including the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+, which reached 304.8 mph in 2019. This incredible achievement was recorded at the ATP Papenburg oval track in Germany, with German racer Marc Basseng behind the wheel.
This record isn’t just about acceleration; it’s about sustained speed, engineering, and precision driving. The U9 Xtreme didn’t just beat electric car records—it beat every production car record in history.
Quad-Motor Powertrain
What makes the U9 Xtreme so extraordinary is its quad-motor setup. Each of the four motors produces 744 horsepower, resulting in a total output of 2,959 horsepower. This power is managed through a 1200-volt system, which is a step up from the standard U9’s 800-volt architecture. The higher voltage allows more power to flow to the motors, but it also generates 67 percent more heat, requiring specially designed high-density battery cells to handle the strain.
The extreme performance also demanded changes beyond the powertrain. The wheel size was reduced from 21 to 20 inches, the front track was narrowed, and wider semi-slick tires were added to the front for improved grip. All these modifications helped the U9 Xtreme maintain stability and control at speeds exceeding 300 mph.
Limited Production
While the U9 Xtreme is technically a production car, it’s a very exclusive one. BYD plans to produce no more than 30 units of this top-speed version, making it a rare hypercar for collectors and enthusiasts. Its record-breaking performance may be available to only a fortunate few, but it undeniably showcases the potential of electric hypercars today.

Final Thoughts
The YangWang U9 Xtreme proves that electric powertrains are redefining what’s possible in automotive performance. With nearly 3,000 horsepower, cutting-edge technology, and a top speed that surpasses all competitors, this hypercar isn’t just fast—it’s a statement. While limited in production, it sets a new benchmark for speed and engineering, showing the world that the future of the hypercar is electric, and it’s incredibly fast.
