The 2026 BMW iX3 has finally made its U.S. debut in Manhattan, after earlier showings in Europe, including the Munich IAA Mobility event. While European buyers will get it first, American customers can expect this new electric SUV in showrooms by summer next year.
Part of BMW’s Neue Klasse Family
The iX3 is the very first model from BMW’s Neue Klasse lineup, a next-generation family of digitally advanced vehicles. According to the company, this lineup could expand to as many as 40 new or refreshed models across the globe within the next two years.
Powertrain and Performance
At launch, the iX3 will only be available as a dual-motor 50 xDrive variant, priced around $60,000. It carries a 108 kWh battery under the floor, promising up to 400 miles of range.
With 463 horsepower and all-wheel drive, it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. BMW has also confirmed that more affordable single-motor versions are planned for 2027, along with a China-specific production model.
Fast Charging Capabilities
Charging speed is one of the iX3’s biggest strengths. It supports 400 kW fast charging, which can add 175 miles of range in only 10 minutes when connected to an 800-volt DC charger.
Although pre-production cars used a J1772 port, the final U.S. models will feature NACS (North American Charging Standard) with an adapter for CCS, making charging easier across networks.
A Software-Defined SUV
The iX3 is more than just an electric SUV—it’s a software-defined vehicle powered by four central computers. BMW’s new Panoramic iDrive system debuts here, combining a 17.9-inch central screen with a full-width head-up display projected onto the windshield.
Smart and Attentive Features
BMW has integrated several intelligent features to improve convenience and safety:
- Attentive Light: Automatically turns on cabin reading lights when someone reaches for an item in the dark.
 - Eye-Tracking Camera: Monitors driver drowsiness and even allows automated lane changes by simply looking at the rear-view mirror at speeds above 40 mph.
 - Surround-View Recording: Captures 40-second video clips of the surroundings, with automatic photo capture during collisions.

Self-Driving Tech with Qualcomm
The iX3 introduces a Level 2 Plus self-driving system developed in partnership with Qualcomm. Called Snapdragon Ride Pilot, it combines cameras, radars, and continuous updates for both highway and city driving. More than 1,400 engineers worked on this system across three continents, and BMW will also offer it to other automakers.
Spacious and Comfortable Cabin
Inside, the iX3 offers a tall roofline and generous space for both front and rear passengers. Headroom and legroom are designed to ensure comfort, even on long trips.
Focus on Sustainability
BMW is highlighting eco-friendly materials in the iX3. The roof uses natural flax fiber supplied by Swiss company Bcamp, while about 30% of the raw material in the engine cover and front storage area comes from recycled fishing nets and ropes. These steps reduce CO₂ impact and highlight BMW’s sustainability goals.

Hydrogen Future Ahead
BMW isn’t abandoning hydrogen. At the iX3 event, company executives confirmed that the iX5 Hydrogen, based on the X5 SUV, will arrive in 2028. It will be BMW’s first mass-produced hydrogen model, though its market rollout will depend on fueling infrastructure availability.
Final Thoughts
The BMW iX3 blends performance, advanced technology, and sustainability in a single package. With long range, ultra-fast charging, a digital-first interface, and innovative safety features, it stands out as the beginning of BMW’s Neue Klasse era. As electric vehicles continue to evolve, the iX3 shows how the brand is preparing for a future where software, sustainability, and smart design go hand in hand.
